Take in honor of World Environment Day which occurs every June 5, PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk (PGE), an affiliate of Subholding Power & New Renewable Energy, through its business unit PGE Area Lahendong, held the Indonesia Coastal Clean Up (ICCU) action, as well as rehabilitation Coral reefs at Malalayang Beach, Manado-North Sulawesi on Saturday, June 10, 2023.
The ICCU activity in Malalayang Manado is PGE's active support for the Ministry of Environment and Forestry's (KLHK) program and the community in terms of environmental sustainability.
The Ministry of Environment and Forestry through the Head of the Waste Management Division at the North Sulawesi Province Environment Service, Nike Mamahit expressed gratitude to PGE and the communities involved, saying, "Today's ICCU activities with PGE and the community are expected to be an example and driving force for other business actors in North Sulawesi to be able to work together in environmental sustainability, especially regarding waste management."
Acting General Manager of PGE Lahendong Area, Fairuz Noor said that this concrete action was the actualization of PGE's commitment to uphold Health, Safety, Security & Environment (HSSE) aspects as the main pillars of PGE's operational activities, "We would like to express our greatest appreciation to the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, North Sulawesi Provincial Government, Manado City Government, Manado Water Sports Community, and, of course, the surrounding community for providing us with the opportunity and support to work in environmental preservation today at Malalayang Beach Manado.”
The ICCU is a movement led by the Directorate of Pollution Control and Coastal and Marine Damage to control marine debris pollution by involving the community and all stakeholders to clean up coastal and marine areas from trash.
The ICCU activity was successfully implemented because of the participation and support of various parties including the North Sulawesi Environmental Service, Manado City Environmental Service, Manado City Government, Boboca Diving Club, Mudung Family Diving Club, and Reformers. The 106 participants were able to remove 432 kg of trash and restore 500 coral reef seedlings.
PGE's geothermal energy-generated electricity in the Lahendong Area is one of the "backbones" of electricity supply in North Sulawesi and Gorontalo. Currently, the geothermal steam field and geothermal power plant PGE Lahendong area are capable of producing 120 MW of energy, which contributes around 25-30% of North Sulawesi and Gorontalo's electricity needs.
