Attending IIGCE 2025, PGE Confirms Its Readiness to Build a Geothermal Ecosystem in Indonesia

The 11th Indonesia International Geothermal Convention & Exhibition (IIGCE) 2025, the largest annual geothermal industry event, returned to Jakarta on Wednesday, September 17, 2025. PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk (PGE) (IDX: PGEO) participated to strengthen its commitment to supporting national energy self-sufficiency and security.

The opening of IIGCE 2025, held at the Jakarta International Convention Center (JICC), was attended by several prominent figures, including the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia; the Deputy Minister of Investment and Downstreaming/Deputy Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Todotua Pasaribu; the Director General of New, Renewable Energy, and Energy Conservation (EBTKE) at the Ministry of ESDM, Prof. Dr. Eng. Eniya Listiani Dewi, B.Eng., M.Eng., IPU; and other prominent figures. This event served as a forum for government, associations, and business actors to discuss potential development and share best practices in geothermal management.

On this occasion, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Bahlil Lahadalia, stated that renewable energy is currently needed globally, as more and more industries prioritize environmentally friendly products. "In the future, geothermal energy will not only be supplied for household consumption, but will also be used by industries from downstream to upstream, thus increasing demand. The government is consistently committed to supporting new and renewable energy, as stipulated in the 2025–2034 RUPTL (Regional Development Plan), which increases the share of renewable energy to 69.5 GW," he said.

In line with this agenda, the Director General of New, Renewable Energy, and Energy Conservation (EBTKE) at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Prof. Dr. Eng. Eniya Listiani Dewi, B.Eng., M.Eng., IPU, stated that the government has succeeded in accelerating the geothermal permitting process. "We've accelerated the licensing process, which previously took 1.5 years, to just 7 days through the Online Single Submission (OSS). Within the next five years, we hope to accelerate and increase capacity by 1 gigawatt (GW), making Indonesia the world's number one geothermal energy producer. With all our available resources, we can also be a learning platform for other countries," he said.

Creating Added Value Through Beyond Electricity

PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk President Director Julfi Hadi emphasized that the IIGCE event provides an opportunity for PGE to open discussions on off-grid geothermal business opportunities.

"Our analysis shows high commercial potential in off-grid businesses, including green hydrogen and green ammonia, whose domestic markets are predicted to grow significantly by 2030. This is an important opportunity for PGE to seize."

PGE seeks to address this challenge through a beyond-electricity strategy. "We are currently preparing a green hydrogen ecosystem. In Indonesia, Pertamina is the only one with an end-to-end process chain, from geothermal, electrolysis, midstream infrastructure, to offtakers," he added.

Remains Focused on Achieving the 1 GW Target

PGE is focused on achieving the 1 GW target in the next 2–3 years and 1.7 GW by 2034. In line with this, PGE has also identified up to 3 GW of geothermal potential from 10 independently managed Geothermal Working Areas (WKP). "This figure is not merely technical data, but a reflection of the vast opportunities Indonesia has to strengthen national energy security. Furthermore, this potential can be a driving force for the transition to clean energy," explained Julfi.

Through this event, which will take place on September 17–19, PGE is ready to play an active role in discussing strategies to strengthen the geothermal industry. "The operation of the Lumut Balai Unit 2 Geothermal Power Plant, the Gunung Tiga greenfield exploration project, the groundbreaking of the Ulubelu green hydrogen pilot project, and the development of other projects are concrete evidence of our commitment to optimizing geothermal utilization," said Julfi.

After becoming fully operational last June, the 55-megawatt (MW) Lumut Balai Unit 2 Geothermal Power Plant was inaugurated by the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Bahlil Lahadalia.

As a pioneer in geothermal energy development in Indonesia with over 40 years of experience, PGE currently manages an installed capacity of 727 MW across six operational areas. PGE is also developing several strategic projects, such as the Hululais Unit 1 & 2 Geothermal Power Plant (110 MW), as well as several co-generation projects with a total capacity of 230 MW.

IIGCE 2025 is a series of events organized by the Indonesian Geothermal Association (API/INAGA) with support from the Directorate General of New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (EBTKE) of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. This year, IIGCE carries the theme "Fostering Collaboration for a Green Economy in Indonesia: The Role of Geothermal Energy in Sustainable Growth."
