Developing Lahendong Geothermal Power Plant Units 7 and 8, PGEO is Ready to Buy and Sell Electricity to PLN.

PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy submitted technical documents in Jakarta on Friday (December 12, 2025) to enable PLN to purchase electricity from this geothermal project. These technical documents are a key requirement for PLN's evaluation to purchase electricity from New and Renewable Energy (NRE) power plants under a total project scheme through a Power Purchase Agreement (PJBL).

Edwil Suzandi, Director of Exploration and Development at PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk, stated that PGEO has continued to advance in optimizing geothermal potential in Lahendong since the operation of Lahendong Geothermal Power Plant Units 5 and 6 in 2016. "The submission of these technical documents is an important step for PGEO in geothermal development in Indonesia, particularly in Lahendong, North Sulawesi. We hope that the submission of these documents will enable PLN to evaluate and purchase electricity from new and renewable energy plants, while also accelerating the next stages of development. Moving forward, PGE is committed to continuing to expand the benefits of geothermal energy so that more people can experience it," said Edwil.

"Currently, PGEO contributes around 30% to electricity needs in North Sulawesi and the surrounding areas. With the addition of production capacity through the Lahendong Geothermal Power Plant Units 7 and 8 and the Binary Unit, this contribution has the potential to increase to 35% to 40% of the region's total electricity needs," Edwil explained in a press release on Tuesday, December 12, 2025.

This step also demonstrates PGEO's concrete contribution to supporting the target of expanding renewable energy-based power plant capacity to 76% by 2025-2034. The geothermal power plant, which utilizes geothermal resources in the Tompaso Prospect, is listed on the Geothermal Potential List requiring further study.

This project is also one of PGEO's four strategic geothermal projects in the 2025-2029 Blue Book by the Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas. This designation follows PGE's official submission through PT Pertamina, marking a significant milestone in developing geothermal potential as the backbone of the national energy transition.

In addition to contributing to electricity supply, the geothermal industry also plays a strategic role in the national economy. From 2010 to 2024, this sector generated approximately IDR 21.43 trillion in Non-Tax State Revenue (PNBP), while also providing direct benefits to producing regions through Revenue Sharing Funds (DBH), which reached approximately IDR 10.82 trillion in the 2019-2024 period. This contribution not only increases regional revenue but also stimulates local economic growth through a multiplier effect.

As a pioneer in geothermal energy development in Indonesia with over 40 years of experience, PGE is focused on achieving its installed capacity target of 1 gigawatt (GW) in the next 2-3 years and 1.8 GW by 2033. In line with this, PGEO has identified up to 3 GW of geothermal potential across 10 independently managed Geothermal Working Areas (WKP).

Currently, PGE manages an installed capacity of 727 MW spread across six operational areas, and is developing a number of other strategic projects, including the Hululais Unit 1 and 2 Geothermal Power Plants with a capacity of 110 MW, as well as several co-generation projects in collaboration with PLN Indonesia Power with a total capacity of 230 MW.
