PGE Lahendong Yaki Monkey Conservation Wins Indonesia Green Award 2022

PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PT PGE) once again achieved another achievement through the flagship Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) program at the 2022 Indonesia Green Awards (IGA) organized by The La Tofi School of CSR. The peak night of the IGA awarding was held on Monday (21/3) in Jakarta.

PT PGE Lahendong Area which operates in North Sulawesi received an award in the category of Developing Biodiversity through the program "Conservation of Yaki Fauna - Rehabilitation of Macaca nigra Species". The award was handed over directly by the Chairman of The La Tofi School of CSR, La Tofi to PGE Corporate Secretary Muhammad Baron.

La Tofi, Chairman of The La Tofi School of CSR, said that IGA is an award given by The La Tofi School of CSR to companies that have a high concern for the environment through a variety of creativity. This year a number of CSR programs were participated by several companies in the IGA Award which was divided into eight categories.

The CSR program is assessed based on a collaborative process and the company's consistency in preserving the environment amidst the pressures of the COVID-19 pandemic. "This consistency is the key word, because the implementation of CSR does not depend on the ups and downs of company profits, where various business obstacles can be overcome by continuing to implement CSR and communicate it," explained La Tofi.

General Manager of PGE Lahendong Area Ahmad Yani separately said that this Yaki fauna conservation program is where the Yaki primate is saved from being kept as pets or illegal trade through a rehabilitation process and then released into the wild in order to increase the natural population. Medical check-ups are also carried out to minimize the risk of disease transmission from animals to humans and vice versa. “Our hope is that we can urge the public to reduce the activity of hunting and maintaining or even consuming yaki. This can also increase public awareness of the importance of yaki conservation,” said Ahmad Yani.

According to Ahmad Yani, conservation efforts through the Biodiversity Program are not only carried out to minimize the impact of operating activities, but are also part of the implementation of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG-Environment, Social, and Governance) and meet the Sustainable Development Goals. The 15th point of the Development Goals (SDGs) is to protect, restore, and support the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems and prevent the loss of biodiversity.

Currently, PGE Lahendong Area with a generating capacity of 120 MW has supported approximately 28% of the electricity needs of the people in North Sulawesi and Gorontalo from environmentally friendly energy sources, namely geothermal energy. Indonesia itself is currently ranked second in geothermal development in the world with a total installed capacity of 2,276 MW, and the contribution from the PGE Working Area is 82 percent of the total installed geothermal capacity in Indonesia, which consists of 672 MW self-operated and 1,205 MW. carried out through Joint Operation Contracts.
