Targeting Indonesia's Energy Self-Sufficiency, PGE Establishes Strategic Collaboration with Pertamina University and University of Auckland

PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk (PGE) (IDX: PGEO) signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with Pertamina University (UPER) and The University of Auckland (UoA), on November 20, 2024, to initiate a capacity building program for PGE’s employees in geothermal technology. This collaboration aims to enhance the expertise and competencies of PGE’s workforce in advancing geothermal technology.

The agreement was signed during PGE's visit to New Zealand on November 20 by PGE President Director Julfi Hadi, UPER Vice Rector for Research, Development, and Cooperation Prof. Dr. techn. Djoko Triyono, and UoA Faculty of Engineering Dean Associate Professor Richard Clarke.

This initiative is part of PGE’s Geothermal Energy Knowledge and Technology Based Advancement Certification (Geo-Elevate) program, which focuses on capacity building as a critical factor in accelerating the utilization of the 3 GW of geothermal reserves managed by the company. Positioned as a key driver of Indonesia's energy self-sufficiency, PGE remains committed to promoting a sustainable energy transition and realizing its vision of making Indonesia a global Geothermal Center of Excellence.

Julfi Hadi emphasized the importance of this collaboration in ensuring that PGE's human resources are globally competitive in developing environmentally friendly and sustainable geothermal energy. "Through a synergy of local and global expertise, we are committed to strengthening Indonesia's role as a Geothermal Center of Excellence on the world stage," Julfi Hadi said.

The program is structured to produce highly skilled professionals through a combination of academic study and hands-on experience. Participants will undergo a four-month advanced skills certification course in Geothermal Energy Technology at UoA, followed by an intensive one-month training program at UPER tailored to industry needs.

As one of the world's leading universities, UoA will provide participants with access to geothermal energy experts. Meanwhile, UPER will offer a local perspective, incorporating innovative approaches that utilize green technology and nature-based solutions.

Elvie Qorina, PGE's Vice President of Human Capital & Business Support, highlighted the strategic importance of the program in supporting the government's energy self-sufficiency agenda and leading the transition towards Net Zero Emission. "Achieving energy self-sufficiency requires robust human resources development. This program accelerates the capabilities of PGE’s personnel to world-class standard, enabling us so to realize our aspiration of becoming the world's Center of Geothermal can be realized," she said.

Prof. Dr. techn. Djoko Triyono remarked, "Through our sustainability-focused curriculum, Pertamina University supports clean energy development aligned with the Tri Dharma of Higher Education. This collaboration with PGE and UoA reflects our commitment to fostering a generation of experts capable of addressing sustainability challenges and advancing energy transformation in Indonesia.”

Richard Clarke added, Associate Professor and Dean of the UoA Faculty of Engineering, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration. "As one of the world's premier geothermal research centers, we are excited to contribute to this initiative. By providing participants with access to industry’s best practices, we aim to prepare them for the future’s challenges. This partnership demonstrate how cross-border collaboration can drive innovation and sustainability in the energy sector.”

This collaboration reaffirms PGE's commitment to advancing human resources competencies, driving innovation, and fostering sustainability. By empowering its workforce through this program, PGE strengthen its role as a pioneer in Indonesia's energy transition and align with global efforts to combat climate change through renewable energy development.
