PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk (PGE) (IDX: PGEO) and Kamojang coffee farmers held a "Joint Harvest and First Export of Kamojang Geothermal Coffee" in Laksana Village, Ibun District, Bandung Regency, located within the Kamojang Geothermal Working Area (WKP), on Friday (July 18, 2025). The coffee beans harvested were from two superior Arabica varieties: Andungsari and USDA.
This harvest is part of the implementation of "Geothermal Dry House" technology, developed by PGE and farmers since 2018. Through a series of observations, research, and trials, this technology emerged as a solution to the geographical challenges of the Kamojang region. Utilizing exhaust steam from geothermal steam traps as an alternative heat source, the "Geothermal Dry House" accelerates the coffee drying process efficiently and environmentally. This innovation has been patented and is the first technology in the world to directly utilize geothermal energy in coffee processing.
The event was attended by the Director General of New, Renewable Energy, and Energy Conservation (EBTKE) of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Prof. Dr. Eng. Eniya Listiani Dewi, B.Eng., M.Eng., IPU; the Director of Geothermal Energy, Directorate General of New, Renewable Energy, and Energy Conservation of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Gigih Udi Atmo, S.T., M.EPM., Ph.D.; the Representative for Finance and MSME Development of the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises; the President Director of PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk, Julfi Hadi; the Director of Operations of PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk, Ahmad Yani; the VP of CSR & SMEPP Management of PT Pertamina (Persero), Rudi Ariffianto; environmental observer Valerina Daniel, M.A.; and other invited guests.
In his remarks, the Director General of New, Renewable Energy, and Energy Conservation (EBTKE) of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Prof. Dr. Eng. Eniya Listiani Dewi, B.Eng., M.Eng., IPU, congratulated PGE's mentored coffee farmers on their first export. She said, "For a company to continue moving forward, innovation is essential. I've always seen PGE's extraordinary spirit. The spirit of innovation has long been ingrained in PGE."
Eniya also emphasized that the government is fully encouraging the optimization of geothermal energy utilization in Indonesia. "We are currently drafting a Ministerial Regulation for direct use like this. We are fully encouraging this to be implemented as our community becomes more aware of and involved in geothermal energy. I also believe that the region will certainly reap even greater benefits," she said.
The Geothermal Dry House can accelerate the drying process up to threefold, resulting in lower operational costs and increased production capacity. The end result is coffee beans with a richer flavor and stronger aroma than conventional methods. Through an environmentally friendly approach based on clean energy, Kamojang coffee is emerging as a high-value green product ready to compete in the global market.
Julfi Hadi, President Director of PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk, stated that this joint harvesting activity demonstrates that geothermal energy is not only used for electricity generation but also for driving village economies and improving people's lives.
"The enthusiasm of the coffee farmers in Kamojang inspires PGE to continue delivering innovations that have a long-term impact on the community. We believe that the development of green energy from geothermal energy should not only be utilized to meet national energy needs but should also be directly felt by the surrounding community. Therefore, we are committed to building a sustainable ecosystem that encourages the creation of a circular economy based on geothermal energy, so that its benefits can be felt equitably and sustainably by all parties," he explained.
Currently, PGE partners with 18 farmer groups and empowers 312 local coffee farmers on 80 hectares of land located around the PGE Kamojang Working Area (WKP) through the Geothermal Coffee Process (GCP) program. Throughout 2024, total sales reached 4.9 tons of green beans, 640 kilograms of roasted beans, and 17,500 packs of ground coffee, generating revenue of IDR 863.9 million.
Furthermore, this joint harvest also marked the first export of geothermal coffee, with a total export volume of 15 tons to Asia and Europe. This step demonstrates international recognition of the quality of Kamojang coffee and the implementation of a clean energy-based circular economy.
