Concerning Biodiversity, PGE Rehabilitation of Yaki Monkeys in Tomohon

Tomohon, 04 December 2020 -Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE) Social Environmental Responsibility Program (TJSL) is not limited to social care assistance to the community, more than that as a form of natural conservation, Pertamina has a biodiversity conservation program (Kehati).

This is the basis for the implementation of the PGE Lahendong Area collaboration with the Masarang Foundation and the North Sulawesi Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) for the conservation of Yaki animals in Tomohon City in particular.

On this day, 11 Yaki monkeys (Macaca nigra) have been translocated from the Tasikoki Wildlife Rescue Center in Bitung to the Yaki Monkey Rehabilitation Center (PRMY) Mount Masarang in Rurukan Village - Tomohon.

PRMY Gunung Masarang itself is the result of a collaboration between PGE and the Masarang Foundation where this activity is in the form of the construction of the Yaki rehabilitation cage in the Tomohon City area.

In this place, the Yaki rehabilitation will be carried out for some time until the animal is deemed ready for release.

PGE Lahendong Area General Manager Chris Toffle hopes that the conservation that is being carried out can provide benefits for wildlife environmental education.

"This preservation is expected to become a means of conservation education and can increase the stakeholders' concern for wildlife conservation," said Chris.

This opportunity was attended by Willie Smits as the supervisor of the Masarang Foundation, the Daily Chairman of the Masarang Foundation, Harry Kaunang, and the Head of the Rurukan Village, Berty Ampuw.

In his remarks Willie Smits appreciated this PGE collaboration for the preservation of endemic animals of North Sulawesi, this collaboration has been running well and harmoniously for a long time in other environmental programs such as the use of sap / sugar palm plants to reforestation.

"In the future this cooperation can be supported by other parties to have a wider positive impact," said Willie.

"If Yaki conservation efforts are not carried out from now on, then the Yaki population will be increasingly threatened and approaching the threshold of extinction," he added.

As we know, the Yaki monkey is one of the endemic animals of North Sulawesi where this animal will not be found in other areas of the world.

Yaki itself is a protected wild animal in Indonesia based on Indonesian Law no. 5 of 1990 concerning Conservation of Living Natural Resources and their Ecosystems and Regulation of the Minister of Environment and Forestry No. 20 of 2018 concerning the Determination of Protected Plants and Animals.

Currently, the number of Sulawesi yaki is decreasing and even facing extinction and illegal hunting activity is the biggest factor in the reduction of the population in nature.
