PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk (PGE) (IDX: PGEO) emphasized the importance of global collaboration in accelerating the development of renewable energy in Indonesia. In the Management Walkthrough (MWT) of the Lumut Balai Unit 2 (LMB 2) Project, PGE appreciated the strategic role of international partners in supporting the acceleration of the project which has now reached 93.49% progress with a target completion in the middle of this year.
"Strategic partnerships with international partners have contributed significantly to the smooth running of this project, especially in terms of technology transfer and development of domestic geothermal professional talent. This collaboration ensures that Lumut Balai Unit 2 can operate with global standards and support PGE's target of 1 GW of installed capacity in the next two years," said Julfi Hadi, President Director of PGE.
The Lumut Balai Unit 2 project includes the construction of steam and brine pipelines to the construction of a power plant. Once operational, Lumut Balai Unit 2 has the potential to reduce carbon emissions equivalent to 581.8 thousand tons of CO2eq per year, making it an important initiative in supporting Indonesia's commitment to reducing carbon emissions.
The development of the Lumut Balai Unit 2 project is the result of cooperation between three countries through a consortium consisting of a Chinese construction company, SEPCO III Electric Power Construction (SEPCO III), the Japanese company Mitsubishi Corporation, and the Indonesian construction company Wijaya Karya (WIKA). Through this collaboration, knowledge sharing occurs between engineers from the three countries.
The technical expertise of the international partners helps PGE overcome construction challenges in challenging terrain and ensures the implementation of the best work methods. This also supports PGE in implementing the highest safety standards during project implementation. In 2024, the development of Lumut Balai Unit 2 successfully recorded 2 million safe man-hours with zero Lost Time Injury (LTI) or safe working hours without incidents that result in lost work time.
This international collaboration is also part of PGE's efforts to strengthen the geothermal ecosystem in Indonesia, increase competitiveness in the global market, and strengthen national energy security. With the support of global partners, PGE is optimistic that it can meet the 1 GW target in the next two years, strengthening Indonesia's position as one of the leaders in geothermal energy development at the global level.
