Community Empowerment

A resilient community is an important part of the transition efforts toward greener future energy. We believe climate actions involve the company and community having the same vision and working together to take part in reducing the impacts of climate change while developing and strengthening the welfare of the surrounding community. We have prepared the Strategic Planning for Community Development Program through 5 pillars, which are:

  1. Improvement of Education Quality
  2. Improvement of Health Quality
  3. Environmental Care
  4. Community Economic Empowerment
  5. Infrastructure and Social

Program:

  1. Kamojang Desa Digital (Kang Dedi) or Kamojang Digital Village

One of the realizations of PGE growing and developing together with the community is manifested in Kamojang Digital Village (Kamojang Desa Digital or abbreviated as Kang Dedi). The program promotes environmentally-friendly technology in establishing community resilience and independence. The three technological aspects developed are:

    1. Kang Dedi Ngenet or Green Internet

where people can get internet access by means of payment in the form of trash or tree planting

    2. Kang Dedi Ngajajapkeun or Rangers App

which offers services in transportation, travel service partner, online sales media, and promotional media

    3. Kang Dedi Melak or Geotato Innovation

in which geothermal steam is utilized to sterilize potato growing medium (cocopeat) and resulted in reducing the use of LPG and increasing potato productivity.

  2. Development of Farmers Group through Agrobusiness Demonstration Plot (Demplot) in Tomohon

Methodology and technology for appropriate and precise cultivation are important factors in increasing agricultural production. The limited knowledge of farmers in Tongadow Subdistrict caused low production of cabai rawit (bird’s eye chili). PGE cooperated with Agricultural Extension Agency (Balai Penyuluhan Pertanian or BPP) in South Tomohon to provide training and develop cabai rawit agribusiness Demonstration Plot (Demplot) so farmers could have better quality seeds, apply balanced fertilization, utilize mulch, and implement intensive maintenance. This program was targeted to add economic value to the community surrounding Lahendong operational area.

  3. Ulubelu Coffee Study House and Utilization of PLTMH (micro-hydro power plant) as Energy Source to Operate Post-Harvest Coffee Processing

Coffee is one of the sources of income for the residents of Ulubelu Subdistrict in Tanggamus District. However, farmers still had limited knowledge and skills in coffee management to produce high-quality coffee, starting from the planting process to post-harvest processing. PGE established Coffee Study House to facilitate farmers' groups to learn and gain knowledge of effective coffee management, from upstream to downstream. The innovations used included using high-pressure machines to fry coffee beans and brines to dry, so productivity and quality could increase but the negative impact on the environment could be minimized.

In addition, PGE also contributed to the development of the Micro-Hydro Power Plant (PLTMH) by utilizing strong river currents as an energy source for coffee farmers in remote areas. With PLTMH, the community did not have to worry about electricity supply in their area, including to power post-harvest coffee processing machines, such as in the roasting process.
